A surgical extraction is required when a tooth is broken below the gum line, has not fully erupted, or has a root structure that makes simple removal difficult. This approach may involve a small incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth fully. Dr. El-Ounsi performs both types of extractions in-office, and sedation options are available to keep you comfortable throughout.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Before your extraction, Dr. El-Ounsi will review your medical history, take the necessary imaging, and discuss anesthesia options with you. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area so you will feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. For patients who experience anxiety or require a more involved extraction, IV sedation is available to help you feel relaxed and at ease.
Once the area is fully numb, the tooth is carefully loosened from its socket using specialized instruments. In surgical cases, a small incision may be made to allow for controlled removal. After the tooth is out, the site is cleaned and, when appropriate, sutured to support healing.

Most patients experience mild swelling, tenderness, and some bleeding in the first 24 to 48 hours following an extraction. These responses are a normal part of healing. Caring for the extraction site properly is important for preventing complications such as dry socket, which occurs when the protective blood clot in the socket is disrupted.
